About the Book

In late 2003, following service in the US Peace Corps, I took my first desk job. I had just spent the last few years hiking to distant mountain villages, organizing communities to build clean water delivery systems. I was tan, fit, and absolutely broke. So when the chance came for a decent paying desk job in Tokyo, I went for it.
Half a year later I was overweight, sluggish, fighting headaches, and experiencing a throbbing pain in my lower back. I was 23 years old. I had experienced, on the small scale of my life, what humanity has been going through for the last 50 years, the shift from laboring with our bodies to laboring with our minds. I had become a Knowledge Worker. Those 6 months of ill-health and back pain served as the pivot point of my life.
Now I spend the days running my yoga studio and working with people all over the world via The Peak Condition Project. Having seen thousands of students come through my doors, I know that what I experienced in Tokyo is happening, to a greater or lesser extent, to every single person who has a job that requires them to spend prolonged periods in a seated position. Over the years I started carving out a system that addresses the consequences of the seated life. Through workshops, private consultations, and refinement after refinement, I've gathered the material that I humbly present to you now.
The Knowledge Workers Survival Guide: Posture
In this guide, you will learn exactly what happens to your muscles and bones when you spend long periods at your desk or in your car. Through detailed explanations and over 200 illustrations, you'll get a grasp of what's happening inside your body that is compromising your posture and overall sense of wellness. And, most importantly, I will teach you how to counteract these problems with a program of stretching and strengthening that has been run successfully for office workers all over the world.
This is not simply a list of exercises you can do at your desk to relieve minor aches and pains. This is a bottom up reclamation of your body. You will be told exactly how to do the exercises, how long to hold them, and what problems to look out for, in clear, simple language. You will finish the guide empowered and motivated, ready to get your body back.
If you've had enough of the stooped shoulders, stiff neck, and aching back that computer work brings, if you want to look taller, slimmer, and more confident, if you want to stave off the serious problems that come after years of seated work, this guide has not only solutions but the actionable steps to achieving those solutions.
